Many of the hundreds, maybe thousands, of free credit report websites out there are owned by a few companies. In fact, Consumer Reports reviewed 24 free credit report websites and found that only 4 (17%) of them weren’t affiliated to the others. Free credit reports are far and few these days (not that they were free to begin with). After the Federal Reserve passed a law requiring websites to point consumers to AnnualCreditReport.com, many of those free credit report sites started offering free credit scores instead. It’s still the same gimmick – sign up for a credit monitoring trial to get your free credit score. Fail to cancel the trial and you just paid for your free credit score.
